Story time with a twist!

Story Explorers provides messy and sensory play with a bookish twist for kids (and their big people) in the Ipswich and South East Queensland area.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US

I'm Lauren. Lapsed nurse. Very lapsed lawyer. Mum of two, and complete and utter children's book nerd.

I have decided to combine the last two descriptors, and organise sensory and messy play sessions themed around my favourite stories that I share with my kids.

Think story time. But with a twist. A messy twist. And better yet, one you don't need to clean up!

I hope I can share my passion for bright colours, awesome stories and fun and games with your family soon!

WHAT WE DO

Story Explorers runs book themed messy play sessions that go for just over an hour, and wrap up with a storytime at the end. During one of our sessions, you can expect to see:

  • Wet/messy play

  • Dry sensory play

  • Craft

  • Games/invitations to play

My aim is that there is something for everyone at a Story Explorers session. All are welcome, however generally children from 0-5 years would get the most enjoyment from the sessions.

If you want to continue the fun at home, we also sell some of our sensory fillers which can be purchased during sessions, or online.

WHAT TO EXPECT

In a word, fun. Each session runs for about an hour. There are plenty of activities for your little person to choose from. Some may be more drawn towards certain types of activities. I suggest you relax and follow your child's lead. They are the explorers after all!

Some other suggestions to get the most enjoyment out of the sessions are:

  • Wear clothes you don't mind your little person (and maybe you!) getting messy in. Mess isn't mandatory, but it is definitely likely.

  • Bring an open mind and be prepared to move out of your comfort zone.

  • Try to put your phone away, and engage with your kids and the other parents. Live 'in the moment' (just a suggestion, we are not the phone police!)

BUT WHY?

WHY SHOULD I LET MY CHILD MAKE A MESS?

I could write a massive spiel here with a billion references about the 5 senses, or 7 senses, or however many there are in 2021, but I am going to spare you, and answer in two words. It's fun.

To elaborate on that, messy and sensory play gives your little person a chance to practice practical skills like scooping and pouring, other fine motor skills, learn cause and effect and about a million other good things. Plus they seem to really enjoy it! Entirely anecdotal but I know that the way to settle down either of my children is through sensory play. Maybe it will work for you too!

MY CHILD ISN'T VERY GOOD AS SITTING STILL AND LISTENING. WILL THIS BE A PROBLEM?

Join the club! No.
We are very child lead, and as the mum of two very free spirits myself (almost) anything goes. Barely any of the session involves sitting still, and if your little person doesn't want to hear a story that day, that's fine! They are the explorers after all.

MY CHILD HAS A SPECIAL REQUIREMENT. CAN YOU HELP WITH THIS?

I will try my best! Send me an email when you book your sessions, and I will be in touch with you.

MY BABY IS STILL MOUTHING. WILL THIS BE UNSAFE?

There will be nothing in a story explorers sensory bin that will be highly toxic in small doses. Some things (like soap foam) are definitely not ideal to eat however most things will be taste safe (but probably not particularly tasty). We recommend supervision and common sense if you have a mouthing baby. Feel free to ask me any questions about the contents of any sensory bin. For what its worth, most of them have been enjoyed by a 8 month old baby before they make it to a session!
